Ik kijk naar The Ascent of Woman van Amanda Foreman en moet even slikken. De ellende die Pandora over de mensheid uitstrooit komt niet uit een doos, maar uit haar baarmoeder. Iemand misvertaalde het Griekse woord ‘pithos’ (jar) naar het Latijnse ‘pyxis’ (box). De kunst is om dit vrouwbeeld van de Grieken (een baarmoeder lekt, daar kan weinig goeds uitkomen) stoïcijns te verdragen, ook dat kan dankzij diezelfde Grieken. Bij de Egyptenaren ging het gelijkwaardiger aan toe.
