Ik moet lachen om ‘four things’, er gaan vier dingen gebeuren, zegt hij, terwijl natuurlijk duizend dingen gebeuren:
‘In the universal library, no book will be an island. It’s all connected […] each word in each book is crosslinked, clustered, cited, extracted, indexed, analyzed, annotated, and woven deeper into the culture than ever before […] every page reads all the other pages […] Think of Wikipedia as one very large book – a single encyclopedia – which of course it is. Most of its 34 million pages are crammed with words […] So what happens when all the books in the world become a single liquid fabric of interconnected words and ideas? Four things…’
Wikipedia is het eerste genetwerkte boek, veranderlijk, ‘a stream of edits’, een ‘becoming’, schrijft Kelly, wat spookachtig klinkt, een stoomtanker die opdoemt in de mist. Een boek is geen eindproduct van een proces, maar zelf een proces, een bijproduct, ‘a continuous flow of thinking, writing, researching, editing, rewriting, sharing, socializing, cognifying, unbundling, marketing, more sharing, and screening’.
Ik ontdek dat mijn verlangen begint te verschuiven. Lange tijd wilde ik het brokstuk, het fragment, het citaat bewaren. Dat wil ik nog steeds, maar nu met een hart erbij dat (n)iets voelt, een hoofd dat wel of niet begrijpt, een maag die omdraait, een geest die tot rust komt, berust.
Misschien ben ik een romanticus, maar ik wil de mens-die-schrijft-denkt-voelt-weet-twijfelt-van-gedachten-verandert als eenheid, als atoom, als elementair deeltje, en niet de pure informatie (die ook: en/en). Noem het bezielde, vervuilde, besmette, gewogen, betrokken informatie.
