Annie Leibovitz fotografeert niet alleen Arnold Schwarzenegger, Whoopi Goldberg, Bruce Springsteen, Scarlett Johansson, ze was ook op Cape Kennedy, Florida, bij de lancering van Apollo 17, Nasa’s laatste bemande vlucht naar de maan. Daarover schrijft ze: ‘I couldn’t decide on the most fundamental thing, which was whether to photograph the people’s faces as the rocket went up or the rocket itself.’ Ze koos voor de gezichten, maar toen het moment daar was draaide ze zich om en nam een foto van de raket.

In 1979 fotografeert Annie Leibovitz Bette Midler in een bed met rozen. ‘I didn’t have my own studio. At that point in my career, it was helpful to rent other photographers’ studios because I could see what kind of equipment was out there and how it was used.’

‘The picture of John Lennon and Yoko Ono lying on the floor together a few hours before he was murdered was ten years in the making.’

Over Eadweard Muybridge: ‘a poet took those pictures’. Mooie observatie, omdat Muybridges manier van fotograferen juist het tegendeel lijkt: de mens als ding, vastgelegd in verschillende aanzichten alsof het een technische tekening van een koffiezetapparaat betreft, foto’s gemaakt door een wetenschapper.
