I couldn\u2019t agree more. No matter how mundane some action might appear, keep at it long enough and it becomes a contemplative, even meditative act. As a writer, then, and as a runner, I don\u2019t find that writing and publishing a book of my own personal thoughts about running makes me stray too far off my usual path. Perhaps I\u2019m just too painstaking a type of person, but I can\u2019t grasp much of anything without putting down my thoughts in writing, so I had to actually get my hands working and write these words. Otherwise, I\u2019d never know what running means to me<\/em>. \u2013 What I talk about, when I talk about running, Haruki Murakami<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Suffering is optional&#8217; is de les die Murakami trekt uit rennen. De pijn is echt, of je die verdraagt een keuze. Hij heeft het over het lopen van marathons. Ik vraag me af of die uitspraak ook voor schrijven geldt. Of je moet houden van een bepaalde pijn, omdat schrijven zo veel uithoudingsvermogen vergt, en of er lijden ligt, die je het best kunt bezweren met een mantra, zoals &#8216;suffering is optional&#8217;, de mantra die sommige marathonlopers erdoorheentrekt. &#8216;It just goes to show how grueling an event a marathon really is. If you don\u2019t keep repeating a mantra of some sort to yourself, you\u2019ll never survive,&#8217; schrijft Murakami. De lessen die hij trekt uit rennen zijn wellicht geen lessen die je kunt generaliseren, zegt hij ook, alsof hij een disclaimer wil toevoegen aan zijn boek. Het zijn <em>zijn<\/em> lessen. &#8216;What\u2019s presented here is <em>me<\/em>, the kind of person I am&#8217;. Omdat ik niet generaliserend kan lezen, vraag ik me af of ik een nieuwe mantra nodig heb, of mijn &#8216;alles komt\/is goed&#8217; voldoet en past bij the kind of person die ik ben. Ik betrek alles wat ik lees op mezelf, zuig het op als het sap uit een gehalveerde sinaasappel die ik tegen mijn dorstige tandvlees duw.
