[Na het lezen van Gouden Bergen, waarin Doortje Smithuijsen een aantal instagrammers volgt die influencer zijn of willen worden. De leegte is ontluisterend, niet van de lifestyle (kleding, lunches, cocktails, champagne, merkspullen \u2013 en altijd met een kunstmatig gebruind gezicht rondlopen omdat dat beter oogt op foto’s) of van de tot in het oneindige doorgevoerde vreemde lus-esthetiek waarmee foto’s gemaakt worden waardoor dezelfde foto’s op dezelfde plekken met dezelfde hashtags en dezelfde belichting en dezelfde poses en dezelfde filters verschijnen, zoals eerder gezien op foto’s van influencers die ze zelf willen worden \u2013 een immense reeks gekloonde foto’s, fractals, maar van de onverschilligheid, het schouders ophalen bij te laat komen op afspraken, het niet aanwezig zijn op gesponsorde events en vervolgens foto’s posten alsof je daar wel was. Het doel heiligt de middelen, het cre\u00ebren van de illusie, het nevenleven. Gouden bergen is opgezet als een real life-docu, afgewisseld met flarden theorie en duiding (Heidegger, Baricco, Verhaeghe, Sontag, Tolentino) en self-posting (‘ik lijk op ze’). Ik raak gefascineerd door Shady, die geen influencer is, maar op een bepaalde manier wel, ze interesseert me meer dan de instagrammers die ze onder haar hoede neemt, de meisjes in haar stal, ze heeft iets ondernemends, en tegelijk, die instagrammers over wie ze zich ontfermt zijn zulke verwende puppies die uit een mand kruipen en met rollen wc-papier door de kamer rennen dat ik me afvraag hoe ze het nog een seconde langer met ze uithoudt, maar goed, die situatie is helder: zonder meisjes geen deals, zonder deals geen spullen, geen campagnes, geen geld, geen foto’s, geen bereik. De meisjes zijn voor Shady wat het aantal likes, followers en comments voor de influencers zelf is: kapitaal waarin ze investeert. Ze was zelfs nauwelijks ouder dan de meisjes die ze representeert toen ze House of Icons, haar agentschap, oprichtte, maar ze is de enige die hard lijkt te werken, continu met excelsheets in de weer, afspraken regelt, de meisjes activeert, met een sneeuwschuiver de sneeuw wegschuift zodat Romy et al zonder weerstand door kan met haar leven (#theromystyle).
