Andrew Brown schrijft in het zijne over het ongeduld van Diderot. Dat ongeduld kwam in de encyclopedie terecht, en daar ligt het, 190 woorden temidden van 20 miljoen andere (Encyclop\u00e9die, 1751-1765), in een prachtig lemma over een plant, als een doodgeslagen vlieg in te heet opgediende soep.<\/p>\n

It cannot be for the natives, who in all probability are acquainted with more characteristics of the aguaxima than are included in this description, and who do not need to be told that the aguaxima grows in their country; it is like telling a French person that the pear tree is a tree that grows in France, in Germany, etc. Neither is it for us; for what does it matter to us that there is in Brazil a tree called aguaxima, if all we know of it is its name? Of what use is this name?
