Le Guin (edited by Carl Freedman) and now I've come at a full stop. I need to write you.

'It's a matter of courtesy,' you say. 'If an artist is alive and you're writing something about him or her, it just seems a strange discourtesy not to let them know.' [...] 'I'm not dead yet.'

So, here I am. I write about you. I want to let you know.

January 2016 I've started a project: I wanted to read all your books. I needed a new world to dive into, I wanted to get absorbed into unknown territory. I guess I needed stories, preferably A Big One. So far I enjoy reading your books very much.

I was unfamiliar with your writing. This unsettles me. Luckily writers talk about their influences or sources of inspiration. Rebecca Solnit, Biblioklept and Rosa Montero like your writing, and since I've enjoyed reading their books/blogs/posts, I wanted to follow their lead.

I write.
I write one blogpost a day.
That's what I do.
I write mostly about what I read, because I spend a lot of time reading.

Since I'm at this point in my life where I read your books, a lot of my thoughts and reflections about your work and about what you say about it end up on my blog. I hope this is okay. I don't make money from my blog. I try to make sense of life through my blog.

I might not be composting experiences the way a novelist does, yet in a way I do because you are what you eat and I'm eating your words :-)

I read a lot of non-fiction. I love personal essays (à la Montaigne), blogs. I always thought, why would anyone make people ('characters') up, when the world itself is so strange, beautiful and terrifying. I try to understand the structures and worlds we build (e.g. the web, internet, wikipedia, where this very strange collective storytelling is taking place, where words feed upon words and people smuggle strange sentences and complete ministories into this encyclopedia).
But because of what you write about storytelling I begin to understand what I might gain from reading fiction: imagination and invention can enlarge the world in a different way. You can build the world. I did not know that.

I've read The Dispossed and now I'm reading Always Coming Home. Of course I've started with your non-fiction books :-)

I think your essay Without egg on your blog is brilliant.

I think there cannot be enough cats online. So thank you.

I hope it is okay to quote you on my personal blog.

Your writing enriches my life.

From Amsterdam, --->

‘fishing the mind’s lake’ – UKL [het trage, het wachten, iets vangen, niets vangen en het wrede aspect van vissen en het isolement, een ander kan niet voor je vissen, of misschien wel, maar wat is het dat diegene vangt]

[122,1864,1862
