Nooit gaat het over een man die een moord pleegt of over een zoon die wegloopt. &#8216;What happened to the writer is not what matters; what matters is the large sense that the writer is able to <em>make<\/em> of what happened.&#8217; Daarom kun je schrijven niet leren. Vaardigheden en vakmanschap kunnen gemis daaraan nooit verdoezelen. <em>Waarom<\/em> schrijft iemand? Wie is hij <em>op papier<\/em>? Wie schrijft zal uit zijn of haar &#8216;own boring, agitated self&#8217; de <em>truth speaker<\/em> tevoorschijn moeten trekken om dat te vertellen. &#8216;The emotional experience that preoccupies the writer: the insight, the wisdom, the thing one has come to say.&#8217;  &#8216;All he wants is to live decently in his own mind&#8217; (over Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, Thomas de Quincey).
