It&#8217;s methaphorical economics.<br \/>\nHuman attention is the scarce resource we compete for.<br \/>\nWe scan, skim, screen and click around \u2013 until we notice something worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>The new way of reading isn&#8217;t lazy or unfocused, it&#8217;s <em>guarded<\/em>.<br \/>\nThe new way of writing is not to be evaluated by authorities, like it used to be, but to communicate, to entertain, to persuade, to get attention.<br \/>\nWe are seekers of others&#8217; attention, not just guardians of our own.<\/p>\n<p>So, how do you pack a lot of meaning into a little message?<br \/>\nYou don&#8217;t.<br \/>\nWe think &#8211; wrongly &#8211; of words as containers for meaning.<br \/>\nA message is no treasure chest full of meaning.<br \/>\n&#8216;It is cold in here&#8217; = &#8216;close the window&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Context makes meaning happen.<\/p>\n<p>I guess Christopher Johnson means, we read between and beyond the lines.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Think of this book as a field guide, not style guide: which berries or mushrooms to pick.
