Wat heb je aan intelligentie, vraagt Rachel Armstrong zich af \u2013 al lijkt ze niet direct op zoek naar een antwoord. Ze pleit, in reactie op Nick \u2013 ‘superintelligence’ \u2013 Bostrom, voor rijkere criteria dan ‘intelligentie’ om waarde aan toe te kennen, om leven te waarderen. Wat is intelligentie trouwens? Gooi Deep Blue in een rivier, en gooi je hond erachteraan. Elk lichaam is ‘intelligent’. Ze heeft ook weinig met transhumanisme. ‘What exactly<\/em> is there to transcend from?’ Wat bindt ons aan het bestaan? Welke waarden? We zullen die waarden opnieuw moeten denken. <\/p>\n

Er is een soort die kan wat de mens niet kan, overleven in leegte, zegt Rachel. Ze toont een foto van een tardigade, een diertje dat eruit ziet als een tardigade*. ‘How can we invite sympathy with life forms?’ Moeten we gist, schimmels en bacteri\u00ebn wel isoleren in steriele laboratoria, afgesloten van zonlicht, open systemen, om ze ‘werk’ te laten doen? Je wil er niet aan, wat Rachel zegt is te groot, te omvattend, en toch bevalt dit denken me \u2013 je bent die mens die zich speciaal voelt (= jezelf) al lang beu. We moeten meer oog hebben voor ‘alles’. Ze beveelt het werk aan van Jane Bennett, Vibrant matter. <\/p>\n
